    A federal judge sentenced a Chicago man to 50 years in federal prison on Wednesday for conspiring to kidnap several people at gunpoint, including one in Naperville. U.S. District Judge Jorge Alonso assigned the 50-year sentence to Sedgwick Williams, 48, of Chicago, after a federal jury in 2024 convicted Williams and codefendant Tai Hon La, 35, of Beach Park, of participating in the kidnapping scheme and related charges, according to the Northern District of Illinois U.S. attorney’s office.

    A Wheaton house fire closed a portion of Roosevelt Road for about two hours on Tuesday. The Wheaton Fire Department responded at about 11:20 a.m. to a structure fire in the 600 block of Polo Drive, officials said. They encountered heavy fire and smoke from an attached garage and attic, with smoke coming out of the second-floor eaves. Firefighters controlled the fire within about 30 minutes. The house was vacant at the time, officials said. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury.
