Out of over 30 new bars and restaurants that opened in metro Phoenix in April, four of them (arguably the four most exciting) were in Tempe. New Tempe eateries ranged from an upbeat Indian restaurant on Mill Avenue to a fancy Italian restaurant in south Tempe. The first time I had the dill pickle pizza from The Starving Artist I almost bailed. I was mingling with friends at The Rebel Lounge after watching a poetry slam when one of my friends asked if I wanted to get pizza. I was pretty tired and almost declined, but he insisted that I absolutely had to try the pickle pizza from a restaurant across the street. My first introduction to pickle pizza was second-hand.

A new location of New Jersey-based Playa Bowls opened its doors in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix on Saturday, May 3. The Phoenix location was opened by former Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Roosevelt Nix. Nix came across the brand as he was looking to invest in a business after his retirement from the NFL. He felt that investing his time and money into a restaurant that focused on healthy, fresh ingredients just made sense. Playa Bowls offers bowls, smoothies, juices and cold brew drinks.
