PHOENIX — A massive plume of originating from the western coast of Africa has settled over Florida, which should help prevent tropical storms and hurricanes from forming, for now. The Saharan Air Layer, or SAL, is a mass of dry dusty air that travels more than 5,000 miles across the Atlantic toward the United States. PHOENIX — Heat was the underlying or contributing cause of 1,600 deaths in the United States. Of that number, nine states accounted for more than 75% of those deaths. For reference, that's more than 50% higher than the previous year, so Arizonans need to be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses. PHOENIX — The cicadas making headline noise around the nation won't be making a sound here in Arizona. Around mid-May until late June, two periodical cicada species will be above ground. The ones known as "Brood XIII" will be emerging for the first time since 2007. These guys were last seen in 2011. However, in Arizona, we won't be seeing this red-eyed orange-bellied species.
