Tallahassee's own Cecily Dean is set to compete at the 100th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee later this month. The 13-year-old seventh-grade homeschooler is one of 12 contestants from Florida among the 243 spellers in the 97th National Spelling Bee, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year (it was skipped three times during World War II and once in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Florida State University students, faculty, and community members gathered for a vigil Friday to honor the victims of Thursday's shooting on its campus. Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old FSU student and the stepson of a Leon County sheriff's deputy, used his stepmother's gun to go on a shooting rampage on Florida State University's Tallahassee campus at 11:50 a.m., killing two people and wounding six others.
