Inviting a group of bikers to help a troubled child seemed like an iffy idea for the parents, but Bikers Against Child Abuse had a plan and it started with being there. The first time the bikers were called to help Samantha, they stayed outside the family home all night. Samantha slept for the first time in ages. Researchers evaluated Bikers Against Child Abuse and concluded that the kids brought into the program had less emotional distress and improved emotional functioning.

Chris Doughty, an associate professor in NAU's informatics department, was writing a paper for a conference and had the idea to test a theory about sauropods, forests and fruit. Doughty created a model of a forest, with animals moving through it, looking at how those animals might have thinned the forest. Bisbee sits in a remote part of Arizona, but the skies weren't as dark as they could be until the city stepped in. In November, Bisbee was designated a "dark sky place," the 22nd such location in Arizona. Keeping skies dark produces great photos, but it's also good for the health of people and wildlife. Erie Street, lined with historic storefronts and vintage cars, offers a chance to step back in time. It runs through Lowell, just down the highway from Bisbee in southern Arizona.
