By the time you read this, Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve and the rest of the Federal Reserve board will have undoubtedly lowered the federal reserve borrowing rate by at least 25 basis points or a 1/4 percent. Some expect it to be a higher cut, and it is highly likely that it will be lowered 75 to a full 100 basis points before the end of the year.

As an entrepreneur and business owner, the term nonprofit has always been a category to try and avoid. When starting out in business, the owner/entrepreneur takes great risk, many times using their own capital to stand up the business. All this is done to generate a profit, so of course, I never really understood much about how the nonprofit sector worked.

On most Sundays around 10:45 a.m., you’ll find me in Room 2209 at Village Baptist Church. I have the privilege of leading an adult lifegroup (or Sunday school for those of you born before 1980) and we are reviewing the impact and importance of some “sidekicks” of the Bible. Britannica Dictionary defines sidekicks as: a person who helps and spends a lot of time with someone who is usually more important, powerful, etc.,Wikipedia’s definition is more accurate, however.

It’s a true statement that we become like those with whom we spend the most time! Of course, that can be good or bad, depending on the company you keep. But in this edition of the Greater Fayetteville Business Journal, we are focusing on the good things we have learned from our mentors. For most of us, our parents were our first mentors and then later in life, perhaps a teacher or professor. I have had some really good mentors in my life.

To explore this a bit further, it might be worth looking into the definition of what a franchise is and is not. A franchise is not just a business with multiple locations. For example, Cracker Barrel is not a franchise but is a publicly traded business.

My education in entrepreneurship started early in life. My father believed in hard work and he taught my two brothers and me to do the same. We were always expected to earn our own money for extracurricular activities. We learned early on that there were no shortcuts, no substitutions for working hard. There were rewards, however. Not just the things we were able to do or have because of hard work. There was this mindset that got created - which was the foundation for my entrepreneurial journey.

Since my last publisher’s comments, our empty nest has become less empty! My wife and I participated in a fundraising auction back on St. Patrick’s Day to help support the 50th anniversary of Carolina College of Biblical Studies! That’s where we learned of a beautiful dog breed called Mini Australian Labradoodle. Although we didn’t intend to get a pet that night, we fell in love with this type of dog at the event and our new dog owner adventure was started.
