    LINCOLN, Neb. (KCAU) — Nebraska state lawmakers passed the $11 billion mainline budget for the next two years. Legislators voted 37 to 11 with 1 not voting on LB 261 with an emergency clause. The bill would appropriate funds for the biennium ending on June 30, 2027. State senators also voted 35 to 12 with 1 not voting on LB 264 with an emergency clause. The measure would provide, change, and get rid of transfers from the cash reserve fund to help balance the budget.

    LINCOLN, Neb. (KCAU) — Wednesday was a big day for Nebraska legislature. The fate of many bills were determined in the third and final round of voting. State senators voted 48 to 1 on LB 140 with an emergency clause, which means the measure will take effect immediately if the governor chooses to sign the bill. The bill would ban students from using their personal electronic devices, such as cell phones, on school grounds or while at school instructional functions like a field trip.

    JACKSON, Neb. (KCAU) — A telephone company in rural Dakota County, Nebraska is investing funds into fiber network. Northeast Nebraska Telephone Company (NNTC) announced a $1.9 million investment on Thursday to develop an all-fiber communications network, which will go east of Dakota City, north of Homer, and southeast of Jackson. The project will include burying 40 miles of fiber optic cable to connect 228 properties in the area.

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Ryan Melton announced his 2026 campaign bid on Friday for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Melton is running as a Democrat and previously ran for the seat in Congress in 2024, where he lost to Republican incumbent Rep. Randy Feenstra by about 34 percentage points. Republican candidate Kevin Virgil endorsed Ryan Melton for the 4th Congressional District seat after losing the GOP primary in June 2024 to Feenstra.

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A historic downtown Sioux City building project was honored on Friday during the 2025 Historic Preservation Week. The 19th annual Treasure of Sioux City award event took place at the Benson Lofts. This year, the award went to Steve Nelson for the Benson Building Adaptive Reuse project. The building was built in 1921 as a car assembly facility, but was recently transformed into loft apartments and commercial spaces. The project cost at least $20 million.
