    Juneteenth is observed on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, when the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 and announced that all enslaved people would be freed. The day, which became a federal holiday in 2021, is honored across the Valley through a number of events that celebrate and educate people about the nation’s second Independence Day. Sharing food will be part of many celebrations, but some Valley events are focusing on food.

    Less than a year after it moved to a new home and debuted a fine dining tasting menu, The Larder & The Delta has closed. Chef and owner Stephen Jones announced the news on social media on Wednesday. “With sad news I have to announce the shuttering of this version of the larder & the delta for now ... I hope not forever because I truly believe that southern food belongs in the fine dining atmosphere,” Jones wrote in an Instagram post from the restaurant’s account.

    Just over a week after the sudden closure of eight Filiberto's Mexican Food restaurants around the Valley, the eateries are on track to reopen. The restaurants that closed earlier this month were owned and operated by Compadres Group. The restaurants shuttered after owner John Schwimmer experienced personal "unforeseen medical issues," according to Cesar Tenorio, a member of the family that founded Filiberto's in 1993.

    Rocco Raschillo grew up in his dad’s restaurants. Now, he’s getting ready to open a second location of one of those spots. Culinary Gangster will open in downtown Phoenix on July 1. The new restaurant will replace Full Speed Chicken & Ribs on Roosevelt Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. “I feel like there’s such a need for scratch kitchen, homemade, counter service restaurants,” Rocco says.
