James "Jim" Patrick Weiers, former Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, died on Friday at age 70. His brother, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, released a statement on Friday evening. "While Jim's life was more than his service to the state, for those who knew him in this context, I ask that you remember and celebrate Jim's service to our great state, as well as his exemplary leadership as the former speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives," Jerry Weiers said.

Phoenix radio DJ Super Snake dies

A longtime voice of Phoenix radio has died, his family announced Saturday afternoon. Super Snake died unexpectedly early Saturday. His family did not release his age or further details about his death. He became well known in the 1990s as a DJ on Power 92, a Phoenix hip-hop music station which was then on the 92.3 frequency.
Fazoli's returns to metro Phoenix with first standalone location since 2008

Fazoli's at Mesa Riverview. You'll soon be able to get those unlimited breadsticks without having to pass through airport security. The fast-casual restaurant Fazoli's is bringing back its first standalone location on Dec. 12 in Mesa. The only other Fazoli's currently in the Valley is at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in Terminal 4 earlier this year. Fazoli's then-CEO Carl Howard told the Phoenix Business Journal in 2015 the chain left Arizona in 2008 because it was underperforming.

A new giraffe was born at the Phoenix Zoo on Oct. 25, 2023. The Phoenix Zoo welcomed a tall new addition last month, the zoo announced Friday morning. Its 10-year-old Masai giraffe, Sunshine, gave birth to a 6-foot, 175-pound female calf on Oct. 25. The zoo said this is Sunshine's fourth calf, and the new baby is being cared for by her mom in the giraffe barn.

Two new messages will soon be appearing on metro Phoenix freeway signs. The winners of Arizona Department of Transportation's annual Safety Message Contest were announced Friday afternoon. The top two messages were selected during a public vote last month. More than 3,500 entries were submitted for the annual contest.
