Craig Hudson/Scripps National Spelling BeeAliyah Alpert competes in the preliminaries of the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. An Arizona 13-year-old has once again placed in the top 10 at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Aliyah Alpert, from Alpert Home School in Phoenix, tied for ninth in the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday at the competition in National Harbor, Maryland.

James "Jim" Patrick Weiers, former Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, died on Friday at age 70. His brother, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, released a statement on Friday evening. "While Jim's life was more than his service to the state, for those who knew him in this context, I ask that you remember and celebrate Jim's service to our great state, as well as his exemplary leadership as the former speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives," Jerry Weiers said.

A longtime voice of Phoenix radio has died, his family announced Saturday afternoon. Super Snake died unexpectedly early Saturday. His family did not release his age or further details about his death. He became well known in the 1990s as a DJ on Power 92, a Phoenix hip-hop music station which was then on the 92.3 frequency.
