TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Investigators still believe Leigh Occhi's body remains on the property where she once lived. That's according to Mississippi State University forensic anthropologist Jesse Goliath. Thirteen-year-old Occhi vanished in 1992 from her home in Tupelo. Her parents declared her legally dead last year. Local, state and federal investigators returned to her childhood home on Honey Locust Drive in January and scoured the area.
Everyone OK after small, distressed plane landed at Tupelo airport

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - Firefighters responded to a distressed plane at the Tupelo Regional Airport. This happened on Tuesday afternoon, April 15. The small plane, en route from Atlanta, Georgia, to Dallas, Texas, alerted the airport shortly before 3:00 and safely landed. Several fire trucks lined the runway but were ultimately not used. WTVA was told the plane blew a fuse, but everyone is OK. The plane is registered to a company in Woodstock, Georgia.

BLUE SPRINGS, Miss. (WTVA) - Weekend storms left behind destruction across Mississippi, including damage in Union County. The National Weather Service is surveying storm damage and working to determine how many tornadoes touched down across the state. It'll announce the results this week. Mark Grubbs lives on County Road 205, close to the Toyota plant. He believes a tornado definitely damaged his house.
Prentiss County working to shore up roadside as threat of flooding looms

JACINTO, Miss. (WTVA) - County supervisors in Prentiss County are worried about the possible washout of a county road this week. North Mississippi is expecting significant rainfall this week, and that's a concern for County Road 1371. Recent rainfall exacerbated the erosion of a section of the roadway near Journey Community Church. Supervisor Rick Owens said the damage wasn't bad at first, but recent rainfall further deteriorated the shoulder.
Deal to bring Target to Tupelo is close to final

TUPELO, Miss. (WTVA) - The deal to bring Target to Tupelo is close to being finalized. The city confirmed the news on Friday afternoon, March 28. There's still some paperwork to finalize, but the city appears to be very confident in everything coming together. The site of the store is expected to be along North Gloster Street, next to Chipotle and across the street from Best Buy. Teen arrested for knife attack in Shannon

SHANNON, Miss. (WTVA) - A teenager is accused of cutting another woman in Lee County. Shannon Police Chief Tony Rogers said the incident happened on Wednesday morning, March 26 at a house on Willow Street. He said Tykeria Bland, 18, got into a fight with another woman, retrieved a kitchen knife and attacked the victim. The victim received medical care for her injuries. Police charged Bland with aggravated assault.
Pontotoc school returns to normal after January fire

PONTOTOC, Miss. (WTVA) - A Pontotoc elementary school recently reopened following a damaging fire. Hundreds of students, faculty and staff returned to D.T. Cox Elementary School on March 18. A fire damaged part of the building in January and forced the school district to temporarily use a nearby church for instruction. This resulted in a slight change to normal routines. Now, it's back to normal. "It feels so good to be back home," Principal Emily Vandiver said.
More information released about man's death in rural Monroe County

BECKER, Miss. (WTVA) - Authorities released more information about the death of a man in rural Monroe County. Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley identified the individual as Richard Tate, 57. The discovery happened on Monday afternoon, March 24 at Tate's home on Sanders Road in the Becker Bottom area. The coroner said a neighbor found Tate dead inside the home. Gurley estimates Tate died at least two weeks ago. The body showed no signs of foul play and he died of natural causes.
Sheriff confirms discovery of body in Monroe County

BECKER, Miss. (WTVA) - Authorities are investigating the discovery of a body in Monroe County. Monroe County Sheriff Kevin Crook confirmed the discovery in Becker Bottom, which is between Aberdeen and Amory. He declined to say if the person died of natural causes or something else. Historic house destroyed in Aberdeen blaze

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WTVA) - A fire destroyed a historic house in Aberdeen. The fire happened Wednesday afternoon, March 12 at the John Ferris Plant House at the corner of Canal Street and Long Street. The cause of the fire is unknown. Aberdeen Mayor Dwight Stevens said former mayor Frank Harrington lived in the house at the time of the fire. Stevens said a housekeeper notified the blaze and helped Harrington escape unharmed.
