WFRV-TV (Green Bay, WI)

In the early 1950s, a group of business leaders in Green Bay came together to establish the Valley Telecasting Company. After receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission, WNAM-TV began broadcasting on April 25, 1955, in Neenah, initially with test patterns. Soon after, the station changed its call letters to WFRV, which stands for Fox River Valley, and relocated its license to Green Bay. With a powerful signal of 100,000 watts, Channel 5 launched its programming at 6:45 PM on June 1, becoming an affiliate of both the ABC and Dumont Networks. The inaugural evening featured a special dedication program, followed by a full schedule of network shows. Viewers from as far south as Beaver Dam, north to Marquette, Michigan, and as far west as Wisconsin Rapids to Port Washington along Lake Michigan could easily tune in to Channel 5. In no time, WFRV-TV5 became a vital part of the local community.
