CHICAGO — The clock is ticking for Chicago on whether to continue a decades-old tax on groceries, or further dig itself into a billion dollar budget deficit. The state’s grocery tax will be phased out January 1, but Springfield is pushing the responsibility onto city’s and towns instead. State lawmakers signed off last year on removing a one percent grocery tax as part of the Gov. JB Pritzker’s 2025 budget plan.

WGN TV News was told several people donning FBI vests illegally entered a business and a residence, taking two Mexican nationals into custody. “We are, right now, investigating the reason why those neighbors have been detained without a warrant,” Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th Ward) said.

CHICAGO (WGN) — The list of homicide exonerations tied to disgraced former Chicago Police Department detective Reynaldo Guevara grew Monday, with Antonio McDowell becoming the 51st individual exonerated in a Guevara case. McDowell’s homicide conviction was officially tossed after a court hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse Monday morning. In total, he spent 23 years wrongfully imprisoned from 1997 to 2020, and has been living with the weight of a wrongful conviction for nearly 28 years.

CHICAGO (WGN) — Illinois lawmakers wrapped up the spring session without allocating any funding for the Chicago Transit Authority in their budget for next year, leaving no plan in place to address a looming large fiscal cliff. That has some CTA riders concerned over possible transit cuts if lawmakers can’t come up with some type of solution soon.
