I’m not a veteran. I am, however, the proud grandson of men who served in World War II and in the Korean War. I grew up with an appreciation and admiration for veterans and the many sacrifices they’ve endured to defend the Constitution and preserve our union throughout our nation’s history. Today’s edition is an extension of that gratitude. It’s about thanking veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces for their service — both during times of war and in peace.

Brian Larsen Settlement Agreement by Joe Biesk on ScribdCAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills officials approved a settlement this week that ended a 19-month legal battle with Brian Larsen – of the Larsen’s Christmas Lights Show fame – where they agreed to drop the village’s lawsuit over zoning violations and pay him $5,000. The vote on Tuesday in favor of settlement was 4-2, with one present and Village President Barbara Wojnicki voting yes.

DIXON – An Arkansas man with a first-degree murder charge hanging over his head for 10 years, in a 40-year-old case, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. Steven Watts, 66, of Berryville, was sentenced in Lee County Court to four years’ probation in the 1983 beating and suffocation of his rival, Gary Dawson, 30, of Peoria.
