What a gift from the weather for Mother’s Day, as we had a sparkling, sunny Sunday that even called for the use of sunscreen if you were outside for prolonged periods. There’s more mild May weather in the forecast all this coming work week, with several days projected to reach the 80s, or close to it (see more below). After high temps approach 80 inland on Monday, the extended outlook calls for more clouds on Tuesday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, some possibly strong to severe.

More sunshine is on the way after a day of clear skies and cool temperatures. While we’re headed for a period of much warmer weather overall, another lake-enhanced cold front will briefly interrupt the warmth Saturday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to peak around lunchtime before winds begin moving in from the northeast, which could bring temperatures down. If you find yourself sneezing or sniffling this weekend, it could be due to the high levels of grass and tree pollen.

On a clear September New York evening in 1981, following a soul crushing loss to John McEnroe in the US Open final for the second consecutive year, Björn Borg disappeared into the night and vanished from the sport. He was only 25. He had accumulated an extraordinary 11 grand slam titles by then, but it left one to wonder how many more championships he could have amassed had he not retired so young. His conqueror that day had a much longer career and played until he was 33.

Sunday is May 4, but warm and sunny weather wasn’t with us, at least around Chicagoland. Sit tight, though: The return of the sunshine isn’t far off. Conditions begin to clear on Monday and temps look to be more seasonably warm throughout the week, leading up to highs in the 70s in the early Mother’s Day weekend forecast (see more below).
