Finally, the unseasonably cool air that’s kept Chicagoland in a springtime chill lately is loosening its grip. It may not quite warm to seasonal levels on Thursday, but it’ll at least be close, with high temperatures creeping into the lower 70s for the first time in nearly two weeks. It’ll still remain cooler along the lake, however, with high temps there closer to the mid-60s.

Weather MapsInteractive RadarClimate & EnvironmentOVERNIGHT: Mostly cloudy, a few spotty showers possible. Northeast winds shift northwest 5-10 mph. Low: 52. Thursday opens with a good deal of cloud coverage, but some breaks for sun are likely toward and just beyond midday. The air aloft is still fairly cool though and daytime heating is likely to help promote the chance for an isolated shower late in the afternoon for a few locations, amounting to about 20% of the metro area.

It was an unseasonably cool start to the week as the official 52 degree high finished a remarkable 20 degrees below normal and far cooler than the 76 degree maximum on this date a year ago. The spread across the area was quite stunning thanks to a persistent lake breeze that kept north shore locations in the middle 40s while far southeast sections toward Rensselaer, Ind., topped out in the lower 70s. The day’s sunshine occurred earlier in the day as cloud coverage took hold during the afternoon.
