The recent pattern of dreary spring weather will hang on through most of Monday for Cinco de Mayo around Chicagoland. But things will turn for the better this week. Light rain and drizzle continues early Monday around the area, with overcast skies. The clouds may break up a little by the late-day hours, with high temperatures around 60 inland. Northeast winds off Lake Michigan, however, will keep it cooler at the lakefront.

Friday dawns with a continuation of extensive cloudiness and more chances for scattered showers as we move into the weekend. Rains will not be continuous, but a “cut off” low pressure system will park itself south and east of the Chicago area over the Ohio Valley and bring widespread cloudiness and a cool “ENE” flow off Lake Michigan which will result in below normal temperatures continuing into early next week.

The remainder of Monday should be dry for Chicagoland following overnight showers. The mostly cloudy conditions of the morning and midday will clear a bit toward the evening hours. We’ll have continued breezy conditions with sustained winds from the west at 20-25 mph gusting up to about 35 mph. Expect high temps in the mid-50s. Winds will die down by tonight, leaving some calmer conditions in place for Tuesday.

Some areas around Chicagoland may see isolated showers or stronger cells with hail in the late night and overnight hours, but the greater threat of severe weather and the potential for tornado development has diminished. Expect temperatures to tumble overnight, bottoming out in the upper 40s around sunrise Saturday. While Friday was unseasonably warm, the day’s cloud cover appears to have increased stability in the atmosphere, reducing the threat of severe weather.

The chillier-than-normal April temperatures we’ve had lately will remain around Chicagoland on Thursday, particularly for lakeside locations. A northeast breeze gusting up to 15 miles per hour will keep lakeside highs in the low 40s. Far inland, however, highs will reach the mid-50s, especially in southwest areas. Some light showers are possible, otherwise it’ll remain mostly dry but also mainly cloudy for the rest of Thursday.
