Finally, the unseasonably cool air that’s kept Chicagoland in a springtime chill lately is loosening its grip. It may not quite warm to seasonal levels on Thursday, but it’ll at least be close, with high temperatures creeping into the lower 70s for the first time in nearly two weeks. It’ll still remain cooler along the lake, however, with high temps there closer to the mid-60s.

If you’re planning outdoor activities around Chicagoland for Memorial Day afternoon, you’re looking at ideal dry and sunny conditions. But make sure to have warmer clothes, especially if you’re near Lake Michigan. Temperatures will remain on the cool side Monday, with highs in some locations about 10 degrees below average. You’ll find the warmest temps in areas to the south and west of Chicago, where highs may reach the low 70s.

It was an unseasonably cool start to the week as the official 52 degree high finished a remarkable 20 degrees below normal and far cooler than the 76 degree maximum on this date a year ago. The spread across the area was quite stunning thanks to a persistent lake breeze that kept north shore locations in the middle 40s while far southeast sections toward Rensselaer, Ind., topped out in the lower 70s. The day’s sunshine occurred earlier in the day as cloud coverage took hold during the afternoon.
