The station is owned by Nexstar Media Group, which is based in Irving, Texas. KRBK operates alongside KOZL-TV, a MyNetworkTV affiliate licensed to Springfield, creating a duopoly. Additionally, Nexstar manages CBS affiliate KOLR (channel 10) in Springfield through a shared services agreement with Mission Broadcasting. Both KRBK and its sister stations share their studios located on East Division Street in Springfield, while KRBK's transmitter can be found on Switchgrass Road, just north of Fordland.

The Missouri General Assembly recently approved two bills that allow the university to do so. President of MSU Richard B. Williams says back in 2005, when the college first changed the name to Missouri State University, part of the legislature included a compromise with the University of Missouri.
