    The annual Independence Day Fireworks extravaganza will take place, as scheduled, on Friday, July 4 at Ridge Ferry Park. The annual celebration, sponsored by Atrium Health Floyd, will see over 1,500 pyrotechnic shells explode from the top of Jackson Hill starting around 9:30 p.m., and will be performed by Zambelli Fireworks of New Castle, Penn. Ridge Ferry Park opens to the public at noon with food trucks and concessions available.

    The Rome-Floyd Development Authority did not receive a $500,000 grant it applied for to mitigate problems at the former O’Neill Manufacturing site on Anderson Street in North Rome. The seven-acre property was home to a wood product manufacturing business until it closed in 2000 following the death of its last chief executive officer, Sean O’Neill. The family-owned company was founded in 1878 in Atlanta and moved to its 102 Anderson St. address in Rome around the turn of the last century.

    The Floyd County Board of Education approved the fiscal year 2026 budget Monday with a proposed decreased millage rate, which is reportedly the lowest millage rate in 20 years, according to Superintendent Glenn White. The budget of $129.5 million was unanimously approved at the June 16 board meeting. When presenting the budget to the board, White shared that the total costs in the budget are only around $100,000 more than in the 2025 budget.
