WTIC-TV (Hartford, CT)

In 1979, Arnold Chase, whose family owned the WTIC radio station, was inspired to create an independent television station after watching the film "The China Syndrome," featuring Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas as journalists. By 1983, Chase's company, Arch Communications, obtained a construction permit for the new station. He initially intended to name it WETG in memory of the recently deceased Governor Ella T. Grasso. However, since another station already held those call letters, he opted for WTIC instead. This call sign had previously been associated with what is now WFSB until 1974 and originally represented the Travelers Insurance Company.
